What Does It Mean to Be a Registered Nurse?

A nurse who has earned an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), has successfully passed the NCLEX-RN exam that is administered by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCBSN), and has met all of the requirements to become a nurse that is outlined by their state’s licencing body is considered to be a registered nurse (RN) (state board of nursing).


The range of responsibilities that can be carried out by a certified nurse is quite extensive. RNs are responsible for a wide variety of tasks, including but not limited to the following: providing direct patient care and putting nursing care plans into action; directing complex nursing care systems; teaching in nursing programmes; educating patients on disease prevention and health maintenance; conducting clinical research, and practising independently in a variety of challenging settings.

Our Visiting Nurses provide client care in the client’s own home. They provide physical assessments, symptom control support, palliative care, rehabilitation therapy, wound care, education, counselling to individuals and families and much more.


Our Clinic Nurses provide care in VON community clinics. Our clinics provide client assessments, wound care, IV medications, client and family education, and much more.


Various schedules are available for Days, Evenings, Nights and/or Weekends. Clinical Support is available 24/7 for all team members.


Nurses hired for the Hastings-Northumberland area may be working in Campbellford and/or Cobourg.

Responsibilities and work

  • Restores and promotes patients’ health by completing the nursing process.
  • Collaborates with physicians and multidisciplinary team members.
  • Provides physical and psychological support to patients, friends, and families.
  • Identifies patient care requirements by establishing personal rapport with patients and their families.
  • Establishes a compassionate environment by providing emotional, psychological, and spiritual support to patients, friends, and families.
  • Assures quality of care by adhering to therapeutic standards; measuring health outcomes against patient care goals and hospital or regulatory standards.
  • Resolves patient problems and needs by utilizing multidisciplinary team strategies.
  • Maintains a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols; medication administration and storage procedures; and controlled substance regulations.
  • Documents patient care services by charting in patient and department records.
  • Maintains continuity among nursing teams by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and continuing needs.
  • Maintains patient confidence and protects operations by keeping information confidential.
  • Ensures operation of equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; calling for repairs; and evaluating new equipment and techniques.
  • Maintains nursing supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops and participating in professional societies.
  • Maintains a cooperative relationship among health care teams by communicating information and participating in team problem-solving methods.
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.

What we need from you:


  • Must be Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the province of practice
  • Experience in community health is an asset
  • A valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle are required
  • A current and original copy of a satisfactory Criminal Records Check is required
  • A Vulnerable Sector Search and/or a Child Abuse Registry Check may be required
  • Must be able to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
